Guide: How to keep couch from sliding
Table of Contents
A sofa that moves every time you sit down is a quiet kind of chaos. You settle in, reach for the remote, and suddenly the whole thing shifts like it has somewhere else to be.
It is not just annoying. A sliding sofa can scratch your floors, ruin your layout and make your living room feel slightly… off.
Our TEDDY sofa is designed for flexibility and comfort. And like any product that lives in real homes, it continues to evolve through feedback from TEDDY owners. Some of the insights led us to introduce TEDDY Grips. A simple addition to help keep your sofa more grounded.
The good news is that a slightly sliding sofa is a fixable problem. And often, it is a small one.
So here is how to keep your couch from sliding and turn restless furniture into something that actually stays put.
Why your couch is sliding in the first place
Before you fix it, it helps to understand it.
Most sofas slide because of one simple thing. Lack of friction.
Smooth sofa legs on smooth floors is not a stable combination. Hardwood, tile and laminate are especially guilty here. They look beautiful but they offer very little grip, which means your sofa can move every time weight shifts.
There are a few common culprits:
-
Slippery floors like wood or tile reduce traction.
-
Smooth or plastic sofa feet glide instead of grip.
-
Dust and dirt act like a fine layer of ball bearings.
-
Daily movement like sitting, standing or pets jumping up adds gradual force. If you live with pets, choosing the right materials also makes a difference. You can read more in our guide to pet-friendly sofas.
Even a heavy sofa can drift over time. Not dramatically. Just enough to be annoying.
The simplest ways to stop a couch from sliding
There is no single fix that works for everyone. It depends on your floor, your sofa and how permanent you want the solution to be.
But these are the methods that consistently work.
1. Use anti-slip grips under the legs
This is the easiest and most effective fix.
Rubber or silicone grips sit under each leg and create friction between the sofa and the floor.
They are quick to install and require no tools.
They work because they do one simple thing well. They stop movement at the source.
Furniture grippers are widely recommended because they add traction without damaging your floor or your sofa.
If your sofa feels like it has a mind of its own, this is usually where you start.
TEDDY Grips
This is exactly where our TEDDY Grips come in. They are designed to keep the TEDDY sofa grounded without ruining the look or feel of your space.
No noise, no slipping, no visual clutter. Just quiet stability. So if you are the owner of a TEDDY sofa, you already have a solution that works with your sofa.
It sits discreetly beneath the modules, holding everything in place while letting the design stay soft, flexible and easy to live with. At the same time, they also help protect your floors from scratches and marks.

2. Add a rug underneath
Sometimes the fix can not be placed on parts of the actual sofa. Instead it will be under the sofa.
A rug adds texture, softness and friction. It creates a surface that naturally holds furniture in place.
It also happens to make your living room feel warmer and more intentional.
Experts often recommend placing at least the front legs of the sofa on a rug to reduce movement and improve stability.
3. Clean your floors regularly
It sounds almost too simple, but it works.
Dust reduces friction, which makes it easier for your sofa to slide.
A quick vacuum or mop can make a noticeable difference, especially on smooth floors.
It is the kind of fix you do not see, but you feel it.
4. Swap felt pads for rubber
Felt pads are great for protecting floors. Not so great for keeping things still.
If your sofa has felt pads underneath, they might be the reason it keeps moving.
Switching to rubber based pads or grips gives you both protection and stability. It is a small change that makes a big difference.
5. Try furniture cups or stoppers
For heavier sofas, furniture cups can help.
These sit under each leg and create a shallow “seat” that prevents movement in any direction. They are especially useful if your sofa tends to drift backwards over time.
Think of them as a gentle anchor.
What about sliding cushions?
Sometimes it is not the sofa that moves. It is the cushions.
That is a different problem with a similar cause.
Smooth fabrics and loose fitting cushions can slide because there is nothing holding them in place.
To fix that, you can:
-
Use non-slip pads between the cushion and base.
-
Add hook and loop fasteners for a more fixed solution.
-
Choose sofas with better structure and deeper seating.
Or, choose a sofa that is designed to stay in place without constant adjustment.
A more permanent solution: Choose a sofa that stays put
A modular sofa like TEDDY gives you flexibility without instability. Pair that with the TEDDY Grips and you get a setup that feels both soft and solid.
Our cushions are also designed to stay where they belong. Not stiff or fixed, but balanced with the right density of foam. Soft enough to sink into, structured enough to hold their place.
Comfort that does not drift.
Because the goal is not just to stop your sofa from sliding. It is to stop thinking about it altogether.
The balance between movement and stillness
Here is the thing. Your sofa should only move when you want it to. Cleaning, rearranging, changing your space. That is part of living.
But it should not move when you sit down.
The best solution is not locking everything in place forever. It is finding that balance between flexibility and stability.
Soft but grounded. Relaxed but reliable. That is when your living room starts to feel right.
TEDDY - A modular couch that stays put
If your couch keeps sliding, you do not necessarily need a new sofa. You just need a bit more grip.
Start simple. Clean the floor. Add grips. Try a rug.
And if you want a solution that feels as considered as the rest of your space, something like our TEDDY Sofa combined with our TEDDY Grips does the job without shouting about it.
Because good design does not just look calm.
It behaves and stays that way too.
